Katie's mum was the coolest mum anyone knew. She was loud, friendly and she owned the local tuck shop. Every lunch time we would crowd around her place of work, hoping to snatch and gobble up the remnants of yesterday's stale stock. I was one of the lucky ones. Katie's mum took a shine to me from the start, filling my outstretched hands with everything from little cookies to complete filled rolls. At Primary School, I had it made.

Staying the night at Katie's house brought similar experiences. Dinner time was always an anticipated affair. Gracing the table would be all manner of delicacies from the hot food closet: pies, frankfurters, sausage rolls – you name it, and we were allowed to consume. I ate and ate and ate, feeling the waistband of my trousers grow ever-tighter. It didn't matter. Staying at Katie's house was an event to be celebrated, a treat to be savoured. Katie's mum had to be the best.

Once I asked Katie if she knew how lucky she was, having a mum that was so amazing. She just shrugged and gave me a half-smile. “You grow tired of the dinners if you have them every day”, she sighed. I couldn't believe her.

The next time I stayed at Katie's, I was there for the entire weekend. Her dad was having a rare day off from work. I had only met him a couple of times and they were certainly memorable; his tall, authoritative presence filling up the entire room. I was never sure how to behave around him. Luckily Katie pulled me away quickly to play Pokemon cards upstairs.

The noises Katie would make were echoed by strange noises downstairs. HP hits were punctuated by dull thuds and thumps. Status impacts were given to the sounds of breaking glass. Numerous amounts of battles were fought, and all of them contained some form of additional sound effect. I didn't think much of it. I figured that Katie's parents were clumsy, or perhaps were having a game of their own.

Katie's mum came in to check on us at around midnight. I noticed her eye was a bit off-colour and swollen.

I didn't understand what had happened until 3 years later.
1998. I was 10.

I freak out when I have moments like that... you illustrated this one wonderfully. It always leaves you thinking "well, now what, dammit?" because it's a little late to react to it...
